Why your Meta advertising is not working: metrics every business should understand
Learn to read Facebook and Instagram ads through business questions, without confusing spend with real growth.
What this guide is for: Change the way you read your ad reports, with plain explanations, audit questions and built-in interactive simulators.
There is a scene that repeats in leadership and marketing meetings: the month ends, the Meta Ads campaign report is reviewed, and the figures show a huge volume of views, reactions and impressions.
Yet when you audit the business’s net revenue or the new customers it actually won, nothing has really changed. That gap often leads to the wrong conclusion that digital advertising does not work. The real problem is not the platform. It is judging performance with surface metrics instead of business indicators.
01
Impressions versus unique users: the illusion of volume
When Meta reports 100,000 impressions, it does not mean 100,000 people saw the ad. An impression is a purely technical event: the creative loading and rendering on someone’s screen.
The platform’s algorithm tries to make the budget go far by delivering impressions quickly. Often the cheapest way for the system to do that is to show the same ad many times to a small group of people.

02
The risk of optimizing for shallow interaction
A high Engagement Rate (reactions, comments, shares) confirms that the ad sparks curiosity, but it does not guarantee that the audience can or intends to buy.
When you choose the “Engagement” objective, Meta favors people with a history of commenting, whether or not they are able or intend to buy.
A technical difference: outbound clicks versus landing page views
The generic Clicks (all) metric counts accidental taps, image clicks and opened comments. To audit real web traffic, you need to filter for Outbound Clicks only.
Even then, there is a significant technical loss between an outbound click and a Landing Page View recorded by the Pixel or the Conversions API.

Diagnosing creative fatigue
No ad keeps the same performance forever. If cost per acquisition (CPA) keeps rising, the usual cause is the creative wearing out within the target segment.
When frequency climbs high in cold audiences, CTR drops and the algorithm raises CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) as a penalty for the weaker response.
Recommended action: instead of pausing the whole campaign, test variations of the first 3 seconds of the video (the hook), change the banner’s color palette or add testimonials to renew interest.
Conclusion: demand metrics tied to direct return
Spending the full budget is not a sign of success. The analytical job is to audit incremental cost per acquisition (CPA) and check that the financial return keeps the business profitable.

Technical metrics evaluation matrix
What each metric covers, its limits and the business control questions to ask.
| Metric | What it measures | What it does NOT measure | Critical question | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Technical loading and rendering of the ad. | Real attention or distinct people. | Is reach growing, or only repetition? | Impressions rising while reach stays flat. |
| Engagement Rate | Share of reactions relative to reach. | Ability to pay or buying intent. | Does engagement bring qualified traffic? | High engagement with no recorded sales. |
| VTR (ThruPlay) | Continuous viewing of 15s or the full video. | Understanding or recall of the offer. | Does the viewer keep the message after the hook? | Retention drops before the CTA. |
| Outbound Clicks | Redirects outside of Meta. | Whether the destination site loaded. | Does the ad set the same expectation as the site? | Many clicks with an immediate bounce. |
| Frequency | Average exposures per unique user. | The exact point where people get annoyed. | Is the audience actively ignoring the piece? | High frequency with falling CTR. |
| Landing Page Views | Full load confirmed by the Pixel/CAPI. | Conversion actions further down the funnel. | Is there technical friction on the server? | A gap of more than 30% versus outbound clicks. |
